UCAAN Change a Life Road Trip - Day #9 - Friday June 24th, 2016

Day #9 - Rochester, NY to Kent, CT - "Experiencing Life"

"Experiencing Life is about taking time out to enjoy the little things, the simple things in life that in most cases cost nothing. When dealing with cancer it's hard not to stress.... but take a moment out of every day to enjoy something that makes you happy" ~ Rachel Shur

As I sit in this huge house that started off as a barn probably a century ago, I reminisce about the days travels. Today, despite the long day, was a simple drive. Uncomplicated with the craziness we tend to get caught up in. We have now mastered our constant packing and unpacking of our car, we have practically worked it to a science of the best ways to get in and out of hotels and today was the first time that we arrived in a town with ample town to really experience it.

Our drive was the standard kind, we drove some freeways through areas of upstate New York which were gorgeously green, lined with trees and lush landscapes. We made a few pit stops at a few travel stations and noticed some interesting signs on the road ways for "Parking Stops" without restrooms. The sign accompanied with these signs said TEXT Stop. You've guessed it, these stops were meant for people to park and text, discouraging people from using their phones while driving - way to go NY! At one of the pit stops, we saw something that looked like a farmer's market, as we approached there were 2 Amish girls; one younger and one older. The older one was in charge of the booth, selling their delicious fruits, vegetables and honey. The zucchini was unlike any I had ever seen in California, they were huge!! And talk about a steal... $1 for one or $2 for 3 of them. I couldn't help it and bought 2 for us and one to give to the family hosting us in Kent. I also bought some green pea pods, strawberries, green onions and honey.

When we reached Route 22, which was like a mystical path into what felt like another world. Within minutes of driving down Route 22, we were off the beaten path driving through a forest of trees that curved and created archways down the road. The beauty was breathtaking, serene and so different from the busy hustle and bustle of our town of Thousand Oaks. The road continued to curve through trees and then small towns with huge homes on even bigger pieces of land, it felt like a calming place with little shops and signs for school buses and people living a simple life.

Eventually we saw the sign for Kent, we had arrived! We drove down one street that we ended up at a small one lane road that drove through a very small bridge, on the other side with more of KENT - like I said it seemed like we were going to another place, a mystical place. The streets are lined with small businesses, people running shops out of their homes, a little cafe and a huge library book sale in front of the library. As you drive down the roan Main Street, you come across even more quaintness in this town of only 3,500. You find yourself feeling at home, looking at the shops, the local Kent Dentist, the small jewelry shop with hand written signs, the bowls of water in front of stores to encourage the locals and the visitors to bring their dogs out for walks in town. Through the town, right near where we are staying are train tracks. Past that is home of the Fife and Drum, a restaurant & Inn established in 1973 by Dolph Traymon and his wife Audrey. (Find out more here: http://www.fifendrum.com/)

My family has been friends with Dolph & Audrey Traymon for over 50 years and I remember coming here as a child, staying at the large yellow Victorian home behind the inn, where Audrey & Dolph call home. Behind the house is a large barn, that has been turned into a remarkable home for Audrey & Dolph's Daughter and son in law Elissa & George, While we are not immediate family, we feel like it here. This home is amazing and so much love and creation has gone into it. You will see from the photos.

When we arrived here today, Doryn and I went exploring... venturing out into the town of Kent to experience life in a small town. We walked past the numerous art galleries and shops, stopped by the local library outdoor book sale, walked past little shops and locals. Families walked down the road, enjoying local restaurants and sights. We found ourselves stopping by a local coffee shop, filled with tea, coffee and sweet treats, we were just looking for a healthy nibble, so we went 2 doors down to see what a local sandwich shop had in store for us. Doryn and I shared a Turkey BLT, delicious and enough to share!! We enjoyed our snack and then walked back to the barn. We walked past some local sculptures and posed with them, taking photos and enjoying the other local art work sculptures on the street including the bush like sculpture in front of the Fife n' Drum - except they were metal letters swirled together, very cool indeed!! From what Audrey told me the town is filled with sculptures like this one (the Alphabet one) throughout the town!

When we returned to the Barn house, we took some time to relax before heading to dinner with Dolph & Audrey. The last time I saw them was when I was 16, that's 20 years ago. It was so wonderful to see them. Now this is a couple that met 66 years ago, when Audrey was 19 and Dolph was 29, within 6 months of meeting they were married! Amazing how things have changed over the years huh!? 66 years folks.... and they still look at one another like it was yesterday I'm sure. The love in their eyes.... beautiful.

So tonight we enjoyed a delicious dinner at the Fife n' Drum with Dolph & Audrey and a wonderful singer named Kendra (i believe) who sings often at the Fife and brings her own crowd. Boy was it hopping for this little town of Kent!!

I forgot to mention. When we first arrived in Kent and met up with George and Elissa, we went to the Fife, my first time in 20 years and on the door was a sign - it was all about me coming to town to speak to cancer patients in the area!! VERY COOL! Elissa told me that she had been informing people in the community about my talk and people were very excited! I am looking forward to it, no matter how many people show up; as Information is Information whether it's 50 or 5 people! The information will spread like wildfire.

So, I'm still sitting here... writing about today like a wonderful story. I hope that you one day decide to come and visit Kent, CT to experience all that Doryn & I have. I hope you have a bite at the Fife and stay at the Inn. Visit and enjoy the shops and feel the energy of this small but strong community!

Oh! I forgot to mention, the house here rattles as the train passes by. But at first when you hear it, it sounds much like a helicopter about to land... then you feel the rumbling followed by the train horn. It's a surreal experience, but it kept Doryn and I listening for what was next.

Here's to a wonderfully magical day and a good night's rest!

UCAAN Change a Life Road Trip - Day #8 - Thursday June 23rd, 2016

Driving from Warren, Michigan to stop in Niagara Falls and ending in Rochester, NY

Today was an unusual day, because we are really good about getting up and leaving when we have to, but with everything going on with Victoria, I think we had hoped that we would be able to meet her this morning. However that wasn’t what happened. We were in fact ready to leave at 10am, and then the news hit us. After calling 6 hospitals in the area including the one she was set to go to last night, we found out that she wasn’t at any of them and hadn’t been. So I called her and left another voicemail and messaged her on facebook. When she responded, she told us what had happened and we were honestly mortified. She unfortunately is in a domestic violent marriage, which we knew only some things about and had referred her to some resources for it, but she wasn’t prepared for what happened. He locked her up in her room, with her severe head pain all night. She didn’t get out or to the hospital till the moment she was writing us on Facebook messenger. Luckily her friend came by and helped her and got her to the hospital. If you would please pray for her during this time and give her the strength to leave him; that would be greatly appreciated. Because of this, we were unable to meet her.

So, we started off a little late and on top of it, we heard about the horrible storms on the East coast and Mid Atlantic which included a hurricane in West Virginia, the tornadoes in Illinois and the 82 mph winds and hail storms in DC and Maryland. This concerned us because we heard the storms were moving and we didn’t want to get caught in them. So we prepared to leave and soon ran into another issue, the route to Niagara Falls we received took us through Canada, and neither of us had passports. So we visited a local AAA office for an updated route. With the help of OnStar, we ended up on a bad route for 2.5 hours. We found ourselves delayed beyond belief with a 5 hour drive ahead of us and it was 3pm and we still had an additional hour and a half extra to get to Rochester…. The decision had to be made.

(We have video and will load it soon!)

As I drove aimlessly and stressed from everything that had happened, I pulled off the road and teared up. Being strong for everyone was what I did. luckily I had Doryn there to be strong for me. I looked at him and cried. “As survivors we try to do so much, more than we probably should because sometimes we feel like we’ve missed so much.” This brought me to record a video about how cancer fighters like myself tend to do too much, and need to sometimes take a step back. Doryn looked at me and told me “It’s Ok, let’s just go to the hotel and relax” The decision was made and the stress instantly was lifted off my shoulders. So unfortunately we didn’t make it to Niagara Falls this time, but we made it to our hotel at 8:45pm and had some dinner out prior to getting back to get this written for you! Honestly we wouldn’t have had the time to go to Niagara Falls after all the delays and get to the hotel at a good time. The great news is we got here safe!!

The rest of the route lead us through Ohio and Pennsylvania as well as gorgeous greenery. Simply Breathtaking!

Doryn and I after we talked about Niagara Falls and made a decision (Video to come soon)

We made it to New York. it was 7pm and still this bright out!!

Tolls, Tolls and More Tolls!

Upstate New York is Beautiful!

On a side note I wanted to mention. I’ve always wanted a man in my life to be fully supporting of me and what I’m doing, it wasn’t until 15 months ago when I met him speed dating that my entire life changed. Doryn shows it to me time and time again, I have been thankful for my life for a long time, but every day I am grateful to have him in my life adding to the best moments, including these. Tonight as we ate dinner, and my food was messed up twice, he sat there patiently not wanting to eat till I got my food (such a gentleman!). He smiled at me with those adoring puppy dog eyes… and just makes me melt every time. He is my rock, the one who calms me down when I’m stressed, the one who makes me laugh about nothing, The one who makes everything and every moment wonderful. I just wanted everyone to know how thankful I am to have such a wonderful man in my life to help me through the stress, the difficult times and the long drives. Thank you Doryn for being wonderful YOU!  And thank you for helping me throughout this journey and helping Change the Lives of Cancer Patients Nationwide!!

UCAAN Change a Life Road Trip Day #6 & #7

Tues June 21st   Day 6   Bloomington, MN to Downer’s Grove, IL

We started with breakfast at the hotel. As we got ready to load our car. A homeless man approached us and asked for a ride; what I didn’t know was that he wanted a ride to the liquor store to get alcohol. Doryn and I said no to this guy at least 5 times and he wouldn’t leave. Somehow we finally got him to leave and we were on our way!

Driving through Wisconsin, we knew we had to get some cheese, being that I’m allergic to cow dairy, I knew I wanted goat cheese so we stopped at a specialty cheese store, off the freeway. The types of cheese were wild from chicken soup cheese to strange baked cheese to goat cheese and cheese shaped and colored like dinosaurs and animals and of course cheese from around the world. This spot attracted us with their extra large cheese sign and an awesome fun with the mouse out in front of the shop.

Sorry it's blurry! Animal colored and shaped cheese

 Chicken Soup Cheese

Yes it's chocolate

When we left we were back on the road, driving through some gorgeous scenery, lush land and sheep. It was nice to see other animals aside from the hundreds of miles of cows we had seen thus far.
We finally arrived in Illinois, Downers Grove. We went out for dinner at one of Doryn’s Favorite restaurants: Red Lobster. After we stopped at a special half price book store and returned to the hotel. Today wasn’t a hugely busy day, but we look forward to the busier days for sure. The more stories the better!!

Tomorrow we drive to Warren Michigan to meet with one of our clients, Victoria Madeline Wade

Wednesday June 22nd, Day #7

Driving from Downers Grove Il to Warren Michigan (316 Miles)

For once we slept in a little bit because we knew that we only had a few hours to drive to get to Warren Michigan. As we started up the car and asked On-Star for our route, they agent told us there was a shooting on a side road off the freeway the night before. Luckily for us, this wasn’t in an area of Michigan we’d be in.  The drive to Warren Michigan was nice. We went through a few toll roads and just as we got a hang of them, they were done… for Illinois that is. Within 30 minutes of leaving Downers Grove, we were in Indiana and then Michigan. The drive was another breath taking view after view of hills and grass, trees galore, huge homes on lots of land and some smaller towns.

White Castle! Doryn's first time!

I Made chicken, zuchinni, red, yellow orange peppers and mushrooms!

We drove through parts of the smaller towns and were amazed at the size of the homes in these communities. …. Beautiful!!  We drove over a gorgeous blue bridge, passes a sign for the Bridge to Canada, saw a HUGE advertising tire on the side of the freeway and saw something that made me excited: A spinning bag holder at Ralph’s affiliate store: Kroger. It’s the simple things in life that make me happy!! Once we arrived at the hotel, the plan was to cook dinner in our electrical NuWave pan, so we headed for the store. We went to Kroger and brought veggies, fruit and chicken for our dinner. We then swung by White Castle, which Doryn had never experienced, we decided it would take a while before we would eat and we needed something to tide us over. J I remember living in NY as a kid and how much I loved going to White Castle, those are some great memories!

When we got back to our room, I cooked us dinner: Chicken with red, yellow and orange mini peppers, zucchini pasta, mushrooms, turmeric and a little juice of orange. It was soo delicious! Healthy and delicious. I ever recorded a video of me cooking to share with everyone. That will be shared soon enough!

Now, the goal for today was to meet with cancer warrior and friend Victoria M. unfortunately her treatments had a negative effect on her and she had to go to the emergency room. Because of that we were unable to see her tonight, but we hope before we leave to be able to see her. Please keep her in your prayers.

Tomorrow we head to make a stop at Niagara Falls in Niagara Falls, NY and then head to our hotel in Rochester, NY.  244.5 miles + 86.2mi = 330.7 (5.5 hrs)
