Our drive from Virginia was remarkable, I must admit that it
was even more beautiful than the other states we had passed through. Filled
with green, lush trees and hill sides, many shade of green and a gorgeous ride.
Our route happened to take us down Interstate 61, which led us through more
pieces of West Virginia. I know the majority of the trip included a huge piece
of West Virginia, but it was beautiful! We found ourselves driving through
different small cities in West Virginia including driving through the Capital
and seeing the gorgeous gold top on the capital building – it was truly
remarkable!
After our long drive, we were so excited to make it to our
hotel in Muldraugh, which was about 30 minutes from Irvington. We arrived at
our hotel: the Golden Manor inn and suites, a bright and vibrant hotel that you
couldn’t miss on the street. It was phenomenal and bright sunflower yellow,
with accents of stone walls, an electric sign out front and pretty plants on
the property. This was one of our favorite hotels on the trip, the rooms were
decked out with nice curtains, an extra-large bed and a room with plenty of
space. The hotel also was equip with an outdoor pool and an indoor pool with
indoor Jacuzzi.
After arriving at the hotel and bringing out stuff in, we got
ready to go meet Gaynell and her mother. On the drive to visit with and meet
Gaynell, we say about 10 military convoys driving down the road. We drove
further and noticed where the trucks were coming from: Fort Knox. We drove down
another long road, we found ourselves surrounded by farms and small homes on
large plots of land. As we continued on the road to Irvington, which was an
even smaller town than Muldraugh, where most restaurants closed early. When we
arrived at the Green Valley Restaurant, a suggestions of Gaynell’s they were
getting ready to close, so we went to another place instead, one center over –
a quaint local Mexican restaurant. We all ordered dinner and found ourselves
talking up a storm. Gaynell was excited to mention that she had reached her 5
year remission mark, her mother, who came along because she wanted to meet me,
was a long time survivor of Melanoma in 1979! WOW, 37 years! We all had a blast
talking and learning more about one another. I think we spent 3 hours with them
and had a great time, it was like we were all great friends reconnecting.
On our drive back to the hotel, we saw people shooting off
fireworks and spotted some fireflies. We just enjoyed the sparkles in the sky
and the surprisingly active fireflies! When we arrived back at our hotel we
decided to go for a dip in the Jacuzzi.
By the end of the day, we were exhausted and ready for some
rest after a long and wonderful day.
